Head and shoulders
Three peaks, the middle one highest. A break of the neckline shows buyers have lost control of an uptrend.

Double top
Two failed attempts at the same high. A close below the trough between them confirms buyers are exhausted.

Double bottom
Two successful defences of the same low. A close above the peak between them confirms sellers are exhausted.

Bull flag
A sharp rally, then a tight, downward-sloping pause. A break above the flag continues the move.

Bear flag
A sharp drop, then a tight, upward-drifting bounce. A break below the flag continues the decline.

Pennant
A sharp move, then a small symmetrical squeeze. It usually resolves in the direction of the move before it.

Ascending triangle
Flat resistance on top, rising lows underneath. Buyers keep stepping in higher until the ceiling gives.

Descending triangle
Flat support underneath, falling highs on top. Sellers keep pressing lower until the floor gives.

Symmetrical triangle
Lower highs and higher lows squeeze price into a point. Direction is decided by the break, not the shape.

Rising wedge
Price climbs, but each push gains less ground. A break below the rising support shows buyers are fading.
